What a huge disaster. An Air India flight from Dubai slid and overshot the runway, while landing at south India’s Mangalore Airport in Karnataka, early this Saturday morning (Indian time). The plane broke up and caught on fire, and the Karnataka State Home Minister has confirmed that 160 passengers lost their lives. Sadly, only five people were rescued.
Firefighters and around 25-30 ambulances were on the scene, but the rugged terrain hampered rescue efforts. Unfortunately, the runway at Mangalore Airport is located on top of a hill and allows no room for errors when landing. Apparently, the plane effectively fell off the end of the runway, with the site of the crash being 10 kilometers (six miles) from the airport in a wooded valley near Kenjar village. The runway tarmac was said to be wet at the time the accident occurred.
It’s a very, very tragic thing to have happened. Mangalore aiport has been closed, so flight disruptions can be expected.
